News & Updatesfrom The GND REC

December Progress at The GND REC

When communities work together, amazing things can happen. Let’s make something amazing happen in Gary New Duluth for all of us; children through seniors.

We continue to work with the City and strengthen our relationship to ensure success of THE GND REC. On December 31st, 2014, the City of Duluth officially became a partner on this project. Jim Filby Williams, City of Duluth, stated: "The City of Duluth is a proud partner with the GND Development Alliance and the GND community to bring this important and exciting project to fruition."

City of Duluth

Work in the building has commenced with demolition work conducted in the restrooms and concession stand.  The restrooms will be brought up to standards required by the Americans With Disabilities Act.

A plumbing permit has been secured and the rough in plumbing is nearly complete.  Thank you Bill Glowaki! The Goodin Company is providing rough in materials for the plumbing work.  Thank you for your support!

A group of volunteers worked together to take down most of the baseball field fencing.  As we prepare for the construction season, reshaping the landscape to facilitate drainage will be our first priority.

We are constantly making progress, progress that would be impossible without your support. There is still much to be done, so please don't forget to donate if you have not already done so.

Now Accepting Donations

The GND Development Alliance is now accepting donations for the revitalization of The GND REC. We are currently in Phase One of the project and need to raise a total of $800,000 to reach our goal. While that sounds like an impossible goal, we are almost 40% there with over $300,000 already donated! Mayor Don Ness said that when communities work together amazing things can happen. That is why we need amazing people, people like you, to get involved an make this dream a reality. Any donation will go a long way but if you cannot donate money, we can always use more volunteers to help move the project along.

If you would like to donate money towards the project you can do so by clicking here or donating through our Facebook Page. Remember that the GND Development Alliance is a 501(c)(3) organization and all donations are tax deductible.

If you would like to donate services or volunteer, please visit our website or Facebook page to contact us.

November Progress at The GND REC

The GND Development Alliance has created a website to communicate progress on the Gary New Duluth Community Center and Recreation Area.  Along with the website we have also developed a new Newsletter that will take place of all previous correspondence.

The website provides the capability to accept cash contributions to the project.  Additionally, individuals, companies and organizations can pledge materials and in-kind services.  All are needed to ensure success.  You will notice on the website that different levels of contribution are recognized on the site.

As you have seen in previous correspondence we have christened the site as The GND REC with its own distinctive logo.  The website and newsletter is focused on the project and progress with the project.  As the capital improvements are completed and The GND REC becomes functional, we anticipate that the website will be transformed into a community communications site, promoting activities and items of interest in Gary New Duluth and throughout the St. Louis River Corridor.

Progress on the project continues with the following being accomplished / addressed:

  • The GND Development Alliance has a signed agreement with the City to make the capital improvements to the site and operate it upon completion.
  • A 551 foot six inch water line with hydrant has been installed from the intersection of Stowe Street and 101st Ave. West.  The project was completed with funds raised by the GND Development Alliance and substantial support by Hanco Utilities who bored and installed the water pipe / hydrant,  Veit Specialty Contracting who provided excavating, and the City of Duluth who did the engineering drawings, did the tie in to the 6 inch main and provided the hydrant. On Wednesday December 3rd, the water line was installed into the building by Hanco Utilities. Now that the water line is completed, the rest of the project can move forward! Thank you all for your support!
  • Construction drawings were completed for the “shack” by WagnerZuan Architecture and a building permit was secured.  Thank you for your support.

We need a wide variety of materials, services and construction skills to ensure success of our project.

You can contribute via the web site, much is needed.  Thank you in advance for your support.
